Melissa Sulkowski first became aware of the Gannon Small Business Development Center at the 6th Annual Women In Leadership Development (WILD) Conference held in May, 2013. She subsequently became a client and continues to work with the SBDC.

Melissa Sulkowski, R.N., M.A., LPC, works as an individual and family counselor at her business, Nurturinse Counseling and Wellness. Nurturinse is unique since its team of counselors “wraps around” the client to provide traditional counseling, yoga, nutrition and massage therapy.

Melissa’s practice also involves collaborative counseling which is traditionally court ordered by the County’s family law judges. The goal of collaborative counseling is to keep the family in tact through the divorce proceedings.

The Nurturinse concept is new to the Erie area and the counseling business grew quickly in response to demand. Growth was welcome, however, Melissa realized that she needed controlled growth and sought the services of the Gannon SBDC and a local CPA firm, Schaffner, Knight, Minnaugh & Company, P.C. to assist her in tailoring her team of counselors and service providers. It is important that each counselor is a champion of the “wrap around” concept. Business consulting also involved consideration of the physical office space in terms of square footage, spatial configuration, and counselor/tenant fees, rents, etc.

Several areas were addressed in terms of business consulting to Nurturinse: business planning, job descriptions, tenant/counselor rental fee basis and structure, SWOT analysis, benchmark financial comparisons and revenue/expense analysis. Another component of the consulting engagement is Melissa’s desire to apply for a 2014-2015 Athena PowerLink recipient mentoring panel. This involved further development and analysis of her business plan to incorporate future strategic goals such as: contract management; marketing and business structure. Currently, Melissa is awaiting the Athena PowerLInk’s decision regarding her application.
